The only thing we will ever get from sitting on the fence is splinters – and we’ll confuse those around us about where we stand into the bargain.

But what are we afraid of? Is it that we fear falling away from Christ – or becoming more like Him? Instead we waver between the two, desiring Christlikeness but somehow fearing alienating those around us by appearing too zealous, too holier-than-thou, then moving back towards worldliness in the hope that we will remain ‘relevant’, only to find ourselves all too quickly swept away with our flesh.

The Divine Father has no desire for us to be exhausting ourselves with this absurd dance we continue to carry out. And how. This is the record the fans have been waiting for since (arguably) 1996. Of course some might say (myself included from time to time) that if you're going to listen to REM, stick with the IRS years.

But I digress.

The immediate impact of Accelerate is how quickly it's all over. After 3 previous albums of ambling, head-in-the-clouds songs, this set of tunes is a shock, perhaps even perverse. It's great! 'Living Well Is The Best Revenge' sets the tone well, with Buck's trademark riffing, and Stipe's voice seems to have been dragged back in time to the Lifes Rich Pageant era.
Mike Mills' bass riffs cut through well, more so than on more recent recordings, and his Beach Boys backing vocals are back in full force.

Despite its urgency and gutsiness, Accelerate ultimately doesn't achieve anything new. Sadly this is REM's catch-22: the diehard fans want stuff like the good old days, which isn't necessarily going to win any new fans today, yet their politically-charged rants and abstract thoughtfulness only serve to alienate their listeners.

That said, Accelerate is a wonderful return to form, and worth checking out as it's certainly the best record they have put out since Bill Berry's departure.

World Of Harsh

So here I am.
Oo, London certainly makes it easier to get from A to B, I'm quite pleased with both the public transport and the affordability of being able to travel further afield to go visiting. Which I like. Because I really like people a lot.

Over the last weeks it's been difficult to stop and chill, but ever more difficult to find other people willing to stop and chill. Hopefully that will be rectified soon.

I'm trying really hard to find some open mics, and gig opportunities, but so far to no avail. I'm sure I'm just not trying hard enough.

Also in my head right now is a desire to head back into the dizzying world of harsh noise and drone, which I love with a wild passion. I'm off to meet someone for a coffee, how cosmopolitan!

TV With A Cat

It's funny how after a short while weird new things can become normal. Actually, tht's not quite how I feel right now, but I'm getting close. Things won't be totally right until we've found a flat and moved in properly and I can watch TV with a cat on my lap.
On that, I'm of to see a flat at 2 today, so I hope it's good and a possibility. I really need my own space.

Work itself is quite fun; so far I've had a few meetings about this coming sunday and eaten with people. It's been good. I feel like I've spent most of my time looking up bus routes to be honest.

Anyway the sun is out so I guess I should go look at things to take pictures of and make a collection of non-touristy interesting things I see in and around the great capital...

Future Prospects

So, folks, I guess this is it.
As I sit here, I am 5 days away from moving to London.
When I get freaked out I have to remind myself that this is what I asked for, this is exactly what I've always wanted. Of course, I accepted the offer ... I had already been through 2 other previous interviews one of which didn't feel right and the other didn't come through for me. So far I'm really excited to start at St James - the people are great and I've been given a real sense that the things I do and will be able to bring and highly valued in me.
So at last, my professional career will actually involve leading worship, organising bands, encouraging and leading others, making films and generally being as creative as I possibly can be!

So of course, when I consider these things, my fear and doubt starts to fade again.
Then I remember I still need to find a flat, and probably a second job, and that I have to meet new people, and that I'm leaving people behind - people I care about so deeply I feel like I'm letting them down by going away, even though of course they're going to be fine!

Today I discovered a delicious piece of music, the White Heat EP by Nic Endo, who was briefly a member of Atari Teenage Riot. It's pure manipulated white noise and it's wonderful. I love how the Creator can reveal Himself in things that have been made by people who don't even know Him, or even let their allegiances lie elsewhere.

So for now, adieu.
I imagine I will embark on some heavy blogging over the coming weeks by way of dealing with such new circumstances...

"Everyone goes through adversity. The phrase to remember when things go wrong is: 'Get over it!' Have you been hurt? Get over it! Have you been betrayed? Get over it! Have you failed? Get over it! Paul writes, 'In every thing give thanks.' In reversal, give thanks. In heartache, give thanks. In poverty and in prosperity, give thanks. God is greater than the criticism you're getting. He's greater than the giants you're facing. He's greater than the mountain you're climbing. He's greater than the burdens you're carrying. Look at the Bible record of men and women who chose to focus on the silver lining, not the dark cloud. These people didn't curse the darkness, they shone a light and scattered it. They chose the right attitude, an attitude of faith. Come on, stop hiding from success because you're afraid to fail. Failure means you're a learner, not a loser. Stop fearing risk! Take God's hand, step out and fulfil His purpose for your life."

This year's best albums

Truth be told, 2007 has been an unbelievably good year for pop music, as well as some really high-end alternative and experimental stuff being produced. Bear with me as I attempt to untangle the nebulous web which is the best albums of 2007...

10. Go! Team - Proof Of Youth
It's music that sounds like a 70's car chase scene! What more can be said, to be honest. A constant flow of horns, handclaps and fun, fun tunes. This is music without pretense - simply doing what it wants to, unashamedly. In a culture up to its eyeballs in reality TV, soulless manufactured 'artists' and corrupt leadership, this is a breath of fresh air. In many ways 'Proof Of Youth' could be perceived as late 90's indie music revived after the millenial fuss over the Prodigy and the dance scene. More, please!

09. The White Stripes - Icky Thump
From where I stand, The White Stripes' rise to commercial and critical acclaim has long been something of a mystery. The whole delivery is difficult and inaccessible, yet people can't get enough of it. Ultimately it's the bluesy nods to Dylan and often Reed that make 'Icky Thump' a wonderfully enjoyable record. In parts it sounds as if it was recorded in a rusty tin can, and it's fantastic! The spluttery, pitch-shifted guitar work on 'You Don't Know What Love Is' frequently sounds like a twisted, garbled Elvis sample. And don't get me started on the marvellous irate sqealing at the end of the title track...

08. The Almost - Southern Weather
Like Dave Grohl and Bryce Avary, there seem to be a fair few fantastic drummers who are closet multi-instrumentalists just waiting for the opportunity to produce their own solo record. Aaron Gillespie of Underoath fame offers us this selection of fine angsty, bubbly rock. The album serves very well as a way to experience fantastic songwriting and production for those who might otherwise struggle with the brittle, energy laden screams of Spencer's contributions to the work of Underoath. 'Say This Sooner' opens 'Southern Weather' with real energy and urgency. In fact, a few screams wouldn't be in any way out of place - particularly the 'I swear I'm not' outtro. Gillespie wears his heart truly on his sleeve through his lyrics; passion, uncertainty, and true faith - 'Amazing Because It Is' makes no effort to keep his faith hidden, culminating into a spine-tingling choir rendition of 'Amazing Grace'. Much like Underoath, this is Christian music for people who really can't stand Christian music.

07. Melt-Banana - Bambi's Dilemma
The latest offering from the Japanese Noise-Pop nutters is in many ways more of the same, albeit less polished and impeccably produced than the last album 'Phantasmagoria'. All the trademark features are here; incomprehensible stuttery lyrics, grumbling basslines and genius guitar hooks warked out of all recognition. This is indie pop not on drugs but a hideous cocktail of sweets and fizzy pop. For all the abrasiveness, there is no sense of aggression - 'Cracked Plaster Cast' drives along with a beautiful pop riff, punctuated with pummeling drum cutaways. Of course, before you've even begun to get into it, it's all over and into the next one. On the whole, the album comes across as if split into two; the first half with poppier tunes like one might expect having heard 'Phantasmagoria', while the second half focusses more on the band's earlier tendencies to throw out short bursts of noise, assaulting the senses and leaving little room to stop for breath. 'T For Tone' shows off Melt-Banana's skill in the experimental. 'Bambi's Dilemma' might not be the most coherent or consistent release this year, but it still stands as music that everyone should hear at some point, if only to help more sheltered folk reach a greater understanding that Radiohead and Editors are not the ones at the cutting edge of modern music. Not by a long shot.

06. Rihanna - Good Girl Gone Bad
It's alright, just take a deep breath. Didn't you see this coming? Well, I can now confirm: Rihanna made one of the best albums of 2007. There is no two ways about it, and let me offer some advice when you swallow your pride and listen to it; 'Umbrella' may well have been overplayed, stayed at number one for too long while it kept suspiciously raining through most of the summer, but IT IS A BRILLIANT SONG. 'Good Girl Gone Bad' is in my opinion the saving grace, perhaps the redeemer of modern R&B which as I see it has lost its way horribly into a careless mush devoid of all passion and production values. Even 'Hate That I Love You', which on first listen appears to slip back into that exact kind of drudgery, manages to stand head and shoulders above anything else of its type by shimmering with care and attention. Plus Rihanna's aparrent love of distorted guitars really pays off, bringing a real bite to 'Shut Up And Drive', which is out-and-out girl band pop. Give it a go.

05. Sigur Rós - Hvarf - Heim
You could argue this is simply more of the same, but with Sigur Ros as good as they are, how can that be a bad thing? A beautiful concept - studio recordings of songs previously only heard live, and live recordings of some of the band's best loved tracks. At it's best, Hvarf - Heim stretches far and wide, painting vast canvasses of sound and evoking glacial Icelandic landscapes. As a live recording, 'Samskeyti' is still too short, but stands out as an achingly splendid ode to glory, with its wide eyed, yet pensive dawdling melody and undulating rhythms. As the world around us rushes by, while we try to scrape a living and earn a few brownie points, this beautiful recording reminds us that there really is more to life, and all we need to do is simply stop for a minute to consider the wonder and beauty that surrounds us all.

04. Jimmy Eat World - Chase This Light
Arguably the co-creators of Emo, Jimmy Eat World know how to write a hook-ridden album or two, and 'Chase This Light' is no exception. Moving back to the sounds that the fans know and love from the revered 'Clarity', the latest offering simply bristles with riffs and pounding choruses, not without a generous side of edge. The title track stands tall as a modern anthem, JEW's trademark vocal harmonies sprawling and drawing the listener deep. This is indie pop-rock that truly touches parts others simply cannot reach.

03. Girls Aloud - Tangled Up
No doubt about it, no doubt about it... the girls done good again! This is pop at its more perfect - clever but unpretentious, engaging yet totally distracting, commercial yet edgy. The production heaves with well constructed beats, melodies and hooks. 'Girl Overboard' is a hypnotic disco number which steals sounds from New Order and thrusts it into the modern age, while the single 'Call The Shots' is a reminder that Girls Aloud remain the greatest girl band on the planet, and criticism of their manufactured nature stands for absolutely nothing. The Spice who?

02. The Rocket Summer - Do You Feel
Bryce Avary's third album proper positively drips with good tunes. In all honesty, the first few listens perhaps take a while for the hooks and melodies to attach themselves to the mind, but once they do there is no going back. This is power-pop most of us can only dream of ever creating. Let the chorus in 'Do You Feel' kick in and carry you away, fists held high and strengthened in heart. 'High Life Scenery' has the best middle-eight of the year - you'll be muttering it under your breath for weeks on end. Production on the album is solid as a rock, and considering Bryce writes, plays, records, and produces it all himself (hm, sounds familiar?), the consistency and quality is to be highly admired. This is the best summer album no-one bought this year. Don't be one of them.

01. Burial - Untrue
Gaining critical acclaim two years in a row, Burial is something special. His glitch-ridden, haunting sounds stir thoughts of a city resonating the echoes of nightclubs closing their doors. This is the sound of the echo of songs; snatches and fragments of melodies, ragged slices of beats which rise and fall as if to catch its breath. 'Archangel' sets the scene well, a dark, brooding soundtrack to walking home in the spitting rain, the streetlights reflecting off the pavement, cabs rolling past taking weary passengers home. The sampled vocals, heavy with longing, twist the track into a dizzying spiral of passion, before leaving suddenly and abruptly... The 3 minute long 'Endorphin' brilliantly suggests the memory of a rave tune that plays over and over in your mind as you take the bus home. Its tones rise and fall. The manipulated vocals drift in and out as if fragments of chatter, faces seen in the past remembered for a moment and then just as suddenly lost forever. This is an album that you should not do without.

And the honourable mentions go to...

You Judas - Happiness
Spoon - Ga Ga Ga Ga Ga
Kylie Minogue -X
Dashboard Confessional - The Shade Of Poison Trees
The Shins - Wincing The Night Away
Melanie C - This Time
The Fiery Furnaces - Widow City
Avril Lavigne - The Best Damn Thing
Biffy Clyro - Puzzle
Maylene And The Sons Of Disaster - II

place to stay

Not been writing much for a while, not since I started work... been busy. someone pretty much immediately, so if I want it, the job's as good as mine.

It's kind of like the exact thing I've wanted to do, within the 'career' track - despite not really being all into that.

But it could open up more opportunities for freelance work, and the pay should be pretty good, so I'm excited.
I've been spending all weekend trying to learn new software as quickly as possible, which hasn't been too hard but I do feel under a bit of pressure to familiarise myself with it was quickly as possible.

More on that later. I go for a 'chat' on Tuesday...

seek the familiar

So I've been considering a few things, mostly concerning negative and destructive mental patterns, habits and dysfunctions. I have found a few things that were quite interesting...

----------------------------------------------------------

It is estimated that 15% or roughly 17 million Americans suffer from depression.

It affects rich and poor, young and old, black and white.

2/3 are never treated.

They do not recognize the illness, and see it as a weakness or personality flaw.

Untreated depression is the most common cause of suicide.

In Australia, New Zealand and Japan, there are more suicides than murders.

Suicide is the third leading cause of death among young people.

Depression is treatable.

Cutting was very much a mystery until 1996 when Princess Diana admitted that she had struggled with it.

Self Injurers use physical pain as an attempt to calm or numb the psychological pain or stress. They injure the outside in an attempt to release the pain on the inside.

Self Injury is an attempt to stop the hurting, an attempt to be clean.

Self injurers and addicts seek the familiar, even if its pain. This is completely foreign to most people.

Self injurers believe pain is their only option, using greater external pain as a relief from the pain inside.

There is hope.
--------------------------------------------------------------

To Write Love On Her Arms

jorb I seen

Trying to work towards putting an application together for this jorb I seen.

Must get my money that is owed me really, could kinda do with it. Though these greatest known matter sinks are by nature dark and invisible, they create bright and chaotic environments in which many forms of radiation -- from radio waves to visible light to X-rays -- have been recorded. These electromagnetic waves all travel at the speed of light.

Sound waves are similar, but they travel far more slowly and are more physical in nature. Sound you hear, for example, can be produced by the visible compression and expansion of a stereo speaker. The waves physically compress the stuff through which they move, be it air, water, or hot interstellar gas.

Other studies have shown that the riotous activity around black holes -- where gas is accelerated to nearly light-speed -- produces many notes that are, all together, much like music. Collectively, the cosmos produce, scientists believe, a cacophonic symphony of inaudible tunes.

Musical production appears to be ubiquitous in Nature. Scientists often call it flicker noise, and it has also been detected in the X-ray outputs of magnetic fields within our solar system. Even Earth hums its own tune. Musical analogies are found in everything from seascapes to brainwaves.

More here

19 + 20

Watched H E R O E S 19 + 20 today.

This is pleasing to me.

new scares

"The story of this world began in a garden.
